"What can we do to make sure our new roof lasts longer than the last one?"
This is one of our most frequently asked questions. While it's easy to say buy better shingles, often time the answer is simple: ventilation!

Roof ventilation is a very import component of your roofing system, and one that is often overlooked by homeowners. In a typical roof replacement, homeowners will have the same components put back on that existed before. By having proper ventilation for your home, your roof will be able to "breathe" better, preventing the shingles from becoming damaged by heat and more susceptible to hail and other dangers.

Proper ventilation will allow the roof the "breathe" by drawing cool air from down low and letting hot air escape out of the top. Typically, "turtle" vents are used to allow hot air to escape. These work fine, provided you have enough of them.

In order to make sure you have enough ventilation, a few simple calculations must be made. the general rule is 1 square foot of ventilation for every 150 square feet of attic space. If you have soffit vents, then you can use 1 square foot of exhaust vents for every 300 square feet of attic space, provided you have equal intake and exhaust vents.

While "turtle" vents were the most common exhaust vents in the past, ridge cap vents are becoming increasingly popular. Ridge capo vents allow a greater amount of air to escape from your attic while getting rid of unsightly vents on your roof, giving it a cleaner appearance.
